We think that there is nothing better to showcase Spain at Expo Milano 2015, dedicated to food and the energy of life, than its markets, public spaces that represent an activity that is deeply rooted in the Spanish culture, a synthesis of the city and its history with food production and trade. They are the meeting point for the supply of products, commercial exchanges, social relations, and today, catering, through popular cuisine and other dishes created by the foods on display.
The Spanish pavilion is conceived as a large open space occupied throughout its entirety by a market of food products from the various regions of Spain, an open and lively space under a unique roof structure with skylights for overhead light that recalls the traditional roofs of universal pavilions and Spanish markets.
The pavilion is organized according to the L-shape of the plot, freeing up two squares, one in front of the building that will act as the main entrance for the public, with water and trees for shade and access from the main avenue of the Expo, and another in the interior, used as an open-air market and place for parties and street parties during the Expo. The layout of the architecture on the plot is structured around two bodies built in relation to these open spaces, inside which the market and the administrative and VIP area will be housed.
