PAPAVIS STABLE

The subject of the competition is the project of a polyfunctional building complex known as “Papavis Stables”. The building block that will host the new municipal property’s complex, is located near the Papafion Orphanage, an exemplary neoclassical building of the newly established Greek state.

The project proposes the morphological correlation of the new public building with Papafio, with by highlighting the first as a point of reference for the inhabitants. The architectural proposal integrates different programs into a continuous world, where they will co-exist and appear dynamically, without one degrading the other, while maintaining their functional autonomy.

The basic idea is – instead of the usual continuous perimetric layout of the enclosed spaces – that the new building should be organized as a clean volume form, which is been ‘’ perforated’’ so the landscape can penetrate the volume. On the ground floor the passages that are created, connect the three individual open spaces, and lead the users to the interior of the atrium, from which they have access to the different uses, from four different points / staircases.

On the superior floors, the gaps as a result of the ‘’perforation’’, the project give space to green terraces. The central patio, as designed, contributes to the improvement of the natural lighting conditions in both the same and central zones, and participates to the passive heating of the interior spaces through its diffusion. The planted roofs create a favorable microclimate for the building, provide significant thermal insulation and, at the same time, provide outdoor spaces for the users of the building.
