GERMANINA

In the area of Germanina Farm, it is proposed to create one INTERPRETATION CENTER for SILK and FIBER FIBERS.

The area is marked by existing traditional buildings of approximately 3100 square meters. The buildings of the Farm have recently been declared a listed building. The space is also characterized by engravings and optical escapes created not only by the existing buildings, but also by retaining walls, remnants of building masonry, tanks and other historical elements that give it together with the natural landscape (trees, topographical data, etc.) a special character.

The existing complex stands on three sides of a large courtyard.

The study proposes the preservation of this central free space, referring to the idea of the central courtyard of a rural farmhouse where daily activities took place.

The interventions follow the following principles:

– Any further new intervention is placed outside the yard boundary.

– The proposed new buildings should assume the synthetic and constructional simplicity of the existing buildings. They follow the same rate of openings of traditional buildings.

– It is also proposed to cover the two main new volumes with a mesh, which refers to the idea of the cocoon and the filaments.

The materials and the earthy colors help the building to fit harmoniously into the natural environment and landscape of the area. The roughness of the materials is extremely valuable, especially in a country like Cyprus that is characterized by an intense and blinding light that falls on them and diffuses, highlighting colors and textures, creating a lot of shading, tones and gradations. Unpainted useless concrete, useless cement brickwork and plasters in earthy colors are used.
