The aim of the intervention is to bring to light the disused municipal structure, used until the 1990s as a former Municipal Slaughterhouse, through its repurposing as a gateway to the aforementioned linear park. The location of the property is particularly interesting from an environmental and landscape point of view, as it is located close to the SIC area of the Stagno di Santa Giusta, along a route of extraordinary tourist interest, but it also plays an important role in the meta-project as it is located as the first building encountered at the entrance to the city of Oristano from the southern part of Arborea Porto. Given the hinge function attributed to the area, a key function for the entire Oristano Ovest Urban Redevelopment project, it is considered essential to “turn” the orientation of the lot. The intervention must open towards the South and West Environmental Park, with its back to the production area. For this reason, the road system is modified, running along the perimeter of the lot and locating the parking lot at the south-east end. The user will therefore already be inside the area and will walk through it, through paths that lead to the different areas with the different functions. On the street front, access is limited to the two ends by expanding the green space and planting new trees that act as a green curtain.
The outdoor spaces are hierarchized. On the south front of the Ex Macello building, a central square is created that distributes the uses and functions of the area: point of arrival and/or departure for users of the Tramway, for visitors to the Porta del Parco Ambientale, for workers of the FAB-LAB and for users of the FOOD-LAB. This also solves the difference in level of access that would occur on the other front. The large open space corresponding to the caretaker’s accommodation becomes an Esplanade for events, sports and recreational activities. Circular elements are inserted to support the activities and encourage aggregation.
The stables are repurposed by keeping the two buildings in better condition and demolishing the dilapidated part. In memory of the past activity and to give a unitary character to the building, the area is covered with a light structure under which, in addition to the building, the external space for educational activities is identified.
The building will house the Information Center and Documentation Center SIC area, becoming the starting/arrival point of the Environmental Park.
The building of the Ex Macello, due to its distribution, construction and size, is suitable for hosting an innovative mixed structure (public/private) that creates new employment areas linked to creativity and the economy of culture and the environment.
The Food Lab is located on the ground floor: a place that will have as its functional destination activities related to food and the local culinary tradition, and that will support both the intervention area and the entire production area, which currently has a lack of supply of this type.
The first floor is intended to be used as a Fab Lab. A space where universities, businesses, freelancers, and experts in the field come together to create real start-ups specializing in the sectors most suited to the location (biosciences, life sciences, energy, environment, clean technologies, etc.) that will be located in an already consolidated system of business incubators present in Sardinia.
