CINE AND THEATER – PALAU

The Montiggia Complex, built between 1887 and 1897 as a military garrison, transformed over the years, becoming a container of public spaces at the service of the citizen.

Designing a public place means completing, creating a built and unbuilt space that has a meaning in itself, that becomes a reference for the whole city. The integration of the various functions translates into the need to think of these spaces-places as complementary and, therefore, necessarily subordinated to a unitary reorganization principle.

The main room is converted into a magic box, the walls and ceiling are covered with sound-absorbing panels which, through a composite pattern of different shades, tries to dematerialize the space. This solution overcomes both the aesthetic deficiencies of the existing building and the technical problems inherent to performance halls such as systems, lights, signs, etc.

The result is a fascinating game of geometric light and dark. A light and permeable construction functionally sews the main room with the foyer, the bar and the multipurpose room. This filter, conceived in iron and glass, organizes the circulation of both the building and the entire lot, leaving the visitor to glimpse the public space hidden behind the room.
